International students are not entitled to publicly funded health services provided by the NZ Government. You are required as a condition of your visa to have a comprehensive medical and travel insurance policy which must also be approved by the college.
Accident Insurance is provided by the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors in New Zealand, but you may still be responsible for all other medical and related costs.
Medical and Travel Insurance
While studying in New Zealand, international students must have appropriate medical and travel insurance which is up to date.
International students must provide evidence of their insurance and medical cover to NZMA. If you are purchasing a policy in your home country we must be provided with a version translated into English so that it can be assessed and approved. NZMA will advise you if the insurance cover is insufficient.
The policy should cover you for the following:
NZMA promotes a policy provided by Southern Cross Travel Insurance. We have promoted this policy since 2001 as it exceeds our minimum requirements. They also provide excellent service and a quick claims reimbursement process. In times of emergency we can provide our students a higher level of assistance than with other policies on the market. We can arrange cover from 2-weeks prior to the programme of study commencing or from the date a student leaves their home country to travel to New Zealand. Students will receive a copy of the policy soon after arrival at the college from Southern Cross; the cover commences prior to arrival when the student has previously paid us the funds to arrange the policy.
