Study Painting and Plastering at NZMA

Take advantage of the building boom! If you’re eligible for Maori and Pasifika Trades Training (MPTT), then the fees are free. And in just 20 weeks you’ll gain the skills you need to become an apprentice or labourer in construction or allied trades.

If you already have a bit of experience in the construction industry, or have a Level 1 or 2 pre-trade qualification, this programme is your perfect next step. It’s fun, practical and workshop-based, so you’ll learn all the skills you need. With professional tutors and a Careers team on your side it’s a great stepping stone to a career as a plasterer or painter.

What will I learn?

  • Workplace safety frameworks and practices
  • Skills for construction trades
  • Painting and plastering: compliance, terminology and roles
  • Allied trade (painting and plastering) project
  • Applying coatings and finishes to a Level 4 (industry standards) finish

What qualifications will I come away with?

  • New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trade Skills (Level 3)

Course Costs

New Zealand Students

This course is part of the government led Youth Guarantee Programme. If you are aged 16-19, and meet the course entry requirements, you can attend this course for FREE.

This course is also part of the Māori and Pasifika Trades Training (MPTT) programme. If you’re Māori or Pasifika and aged 16-40, you might be able to get a scholarship to pay your course fees. You’ll also get one-on-one career coaching, help finding work, and other learner support. You can enroll in the MPTT programme once you’ve gotten into your course, so ask NZMA about how to apply. 

Student loans and allowances are available if you meet the criteria.

MPTT eligibility criteria:

  • a Domestic Student, or an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident currently residing in New Zealand;
  • and Māori and/or Pasifika;
  • and aged between 16 and 40 years of age (inclusive) at the start date of the first course in the programme of study or training.
