Study Construction at NZMA

The New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trade Skills (Level 3) with a focus on carpentry, aims to arm you with the basic carpentry skills so you are work-ready.

This programme will give you the skills and knowledge you need so you can enter the workforce ready to embark on an apprenticeship. It has a strong vocational focus, so you'll gain lots of basic skills about timber-framed construction, including tools and machinery, and developing practical skills through building re-locatable sheds and houses. You will also have hands-on experience at a construction site through a work-based learning arrangement for at least six weeks, engaged on projects in a commercial housing fabrication environment. You will also learn about the building industry, and the role of contractors and sub-contractors. This is a full-time study programme to achieve 120 credits, and you can continue with your apprenticeship training to achieve the Level 3 qualification.

What will I learn?

  • Workplace health and safety, including first aid and emergency procedures
  • Workplace communications and timekeeping requirements for construction sites
  • Safe use of hand and power tools, and safe working procedures on construction sites (so you'll be ready to start onsite work as soon as you graduate)
