Study Early Childhood Education at NZMA

This programme is designed for people who are involved in the care and education of children in a variety of Early Childhood Education (ECE) settings including care centres and playgroups. 

Course content includes:

  • The development and learning of infants, toddlers, and young children
  • Context of Early Childhood Education in Aotearoa
  • Learning experiences for children during practical experience in an Early Learning Centre.
  • Planning for intentional teaching and learning in Early Childhood Education
  • Legislation and ethics in practice

Domestic Students:

International Students: 

Tuition Fees: NZD $11,000

Course Fee: NZD $1,500

The New Zealand Government has imposed an international student levy on tuition and course related fees. From 1 January 2019 the levy will be 0.89% of the compulsory tuition fees.

Entry Requirements

  • Domestic students need to be 17 years of age or older at the time the programme commences. International students need to be 18 years of age or older.
  • Be reliable, responsible and in good health. 
  • Hold a New Zealand Certificate in Early Childhood Education (Level 3) or NCEA Level 2, or equivalent.
  • Or for those with relevant ECE work experience, a referee who knows the applicant in a professional capacity to provide a confidential referee report in support of the application. Applications will be considered on a case by case basis.
  • Meet the minimum requirements of the NZMA Entry Assessment.
  • Have an acceptable safety check (New Zealand Police Vet) prior to beginning of practical experience; home-based must be employed in a licenced Home-based ECE service, produce reference and attestation letter which includes current police vetting information from HB employer. If the programme begins before the Vet report has been received from the New Zealand Police, students may begin the programme but may not attend any practical experience at an ECE Service Provider until an acceptable report has been received.
  • If English is not your first language, an IELTS of Level 5.5 (General or Academic) with no sub-score less than 5, or equivalent is required
  • International students must have travel and medical insurance and a valid visa.
    *Other English Tests / evidence may be approved as advised by NZQA
