Catering Plus (April/May 2010) - Creative Table Design Awards 2009

Catering Plus (April/May 2010) - Creative Table Design Awards 2009

Thursday 22 April

A group of NZMA hospitality diploma students stood out from the crowd at the 2009 Catering Plus Creative Table Design Awards.

Two teams from our Auckland Central Academy entered the competition – and both received a mention and a photograph of their inspired entries in the latest issue of Catering Plus magazine.

Taryn Haylock and Grace Chen created an amazing table setting for a Breast Cancer function. They folded the white napkins and pink tulle into a ribbon shape and created a centrepiece with mirrors (for self reflection), candles (for hope and light), water (to wash away the pain), flowers (for beauty) and string (for the support system).

Thi Thu Huyen (Gwen) Nguyen, Tomomi Saso and Amender Singh created a stunning Christmas-themed table for a family gathering. The centrepiece was a lantern with a star (for happiness), heart (for love) and clover leaf (for luck) accent created from silver wire.

Both groups competed in the Innovative Event Table Setting section of the awards. Their brief was to set a themed table of ten covers based on an event happening in New Zealand.

NZMA diploma tutor Elaine Rio, who helped the students perfect their entries, said the competition was a great opportunity for her students to demonstrate their flair and enthusiasm.

“I had a group of very creative students who were eager to showcase their talents,” says Elaine.

“It was also a good opportunity for me, as a tutor, to challenge my students and give them exposure. It was a good learning experience for them and at the same time it is an additional point to include in their CV’s.  It is also a way to boost their confidence and express how serious and enthusiastic they are in studying hospitality.”

The students worked hard practicing and perfecting their table settings after class and they received a lot of support, feedback and encouragement from tutors and staff at the academy.

“It definitely gives them pride and boosts their morale because their work is being acknowledged. Also if you work in the hospitality industry, table setting is an important aspect. Creative table setting helps to create a lovely ambiance to match the scrumptious food being served at a function or event. It is a significant part of celebrating a special occasion and something that most of us really appreciate.”
