Certificate in Cookery (Level 3) is a hands-on programme that offers a perfect introduction to the catering and hospitality industry. New Zealand is facing a huge shortage of trained chefs, so as you finish this course you will be in hot demand by employers nationwide.

Build your chef skills in a supportive and fun environment with some of our well-respected tutors. Learn how to bake tarts and sponge cakes, or a delicious plate of fish and chips with homemade mayonnaise. You will even get to taste your own dishes or take the food home for your friends and family to enjoy! All students are provided with a knife and uniform set, so what are you waiting for? What will I learn?

  • Cooking methods – prepare food with different cooking styles from grilling and frying to braising and stewing
  • Knife handling skills – explore different cutting techniques from fileting fish to creating luxury cuts of beef or pork
  • Management – learn everything you need to know about how to run a successful restaurant
  • Menu planning and costing – design menus for various occasions and within a set budget
  • Food safety – learn the industry standards around food storage and hygiene

What qualifications will I gain? 

  • New Zealand Certificate in Cookery (Level 3)
  • NCEA Level 2
  • NZMA Certificate in Food Safety

What are the entry requirements?

  • Domestic students need to be 16 or older, international students need to be 18 or older.
  • If English is your second language you’ll need an IELTS score of at least 5.0 with no band score lower than 5.0, or equivalent*.

*Other English Tests / evidence may be approved as advised by NZQA
