NZMA’s first-ever Auckland Council cadets have wowed city leaders and landed themselves full-time permanent jobs.
Level 3 contact centre graduate Tumai Daniel has spent the past 12 months interning in the Council’s customer service department, while Level 4 business graduate Anselea Kalone completed an administration cadetship with City Parks. Both Auckland South students shone in their respective roles, and were quickly offered permanent employment with the Auckland Council on the completion of their cadetships.
NZMA Careers Advisor Leilani Hoyt said it was a fantastic result that marked the beginning of exciting career paths for both graduates.
“Tumai and Anselea have done incredibly well. They obviously worked hard and proved themselves during the 12-month programme, and it has given them both a brilliant foot in the door,” Leilani said.
“It just goes to show that the Auckland Council’s new Cadet Programme is definitely worth considering for our business and contact centre students. They get to choose which area they want to work in, with departments ranging from the Mayor’s Office or Community Development and Safety, right through to Parks, Sport and Recreation or the Environmental Department. There are opportunities for everyone!”
The new initiative was launched last year, as part of the Council’s push to help make Auckland the world’s most liveable city. The 12 month programme gives selected candidates the chance to earn money while gaining vital work experience and further training.
“It’s an amazing opportunity because cadets gain insider knowledge of the Council, and they get to experience how the organisation actually operates. Plus it has the potential to lead to full-time work at the end.”
The programme is seen as a win-win – not just providing exciting pathways for young people, but also injecting fresh life and vision into the organisation itself.
“The Council gets newcomers who are very keen to work for them and who bring with them not just skills, but also new ideas and perspectives.”
Auckland Council is one of New Zealand’s largest employers, and has a huge variety of jobs on offer. Their Cadet Programme provides a valuable foundation for a career within the organisation or as a springboard into many other opportunities.
The second round of cadets will launch into their new roles this October. Special information evenings are being held over the next few weeks for those interested in applying.
