Teacher in training

Jyotika Devi Kumar | Success Story NZMA

I enrolled at NZMA because I have three children of my own and I really love kids! I wanted to learn more about children because my middle child was very hard to handle.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in Early Childhood Education?

I enrolled at NZMA because I have three children of my own and I really love kids! I wanted to learn more about children because my middle child was very hard to handle. Once I started studying at NZMA and doing practicums, I learnt so many great techniques that worked really well with her. I am much calmer and more patient now!

What are some of the things you’ve enjoyed most about being an NZCC student?

Making new friends and developing my knowledge of Early Childhood Education. I’ve learnt a lot about other cultures – in particular the importance of honesty and respect. I’ve also found the practicums very valuable. Last year while studying my Level 4 I worked at Flanshaw Early Childhood Centre and this year I attended practicums at First Steps Seymour. After being observed during my practicums, First Steps Seymour offered me a job as a teacher in training. I’m due to start shortly, and in the meantime have been working for them as a centre-based reliever. I feel great!

What are your plans for the future?

NZMA has given me a huge kick-start. If it wasn’t for them I would still be working in a factory with limited hours and no chance of a pay rise. Now my goal is to one day open up my own Early Childhood Centre.
