Certificate in Building (Level 4)

Creating Communities/Nuline Construction Intern

Construction is an unusual industry for a young woman to want to get into. What appealed to you about it?
I decided to get into construction as I was a stay-at-home mum and wanted to learn and do something new.  My dad and two older brothers have worked in this trade for many years and thought it might be a good job for me too.  I jumped online and came across NZMA Construction – it turned out their workshop was just down the road from where I live, so it was really convenient.  I signed up, and it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!

Tell us a bit about the course.
It’s the best course I’ve ever done actually! Among the many highlights were meeting great tutors, making lots of new friends and just the overall experience. Then at the graduation ceremony I was awarded the Head of Faculty Excellence Award.  This came with a Creating Communities/Nuline Construction 12 month work scholarship! I was overwhelmed, excited and proud of myself, and winning this shows that all my hard work and dedication have paid off.  I’ll definitely be accepting the work scholarship and can’t wait to get started!

What do you think will be the biggest challenges as a female in a male-dominated sector?
I think females will find it harder to find a job, because employers may not think we’d be strong enough to carry out specific tasks such as spending all day heavy lifting.  Having said that, you should never doubt yourself, so I am just going to go for it and try my best.  My long term goal is to build a big family home for me, my brothers and our children.
